Senior Helpers announced the following caregivers for achieving levels of service with the company: Delilah Hunt, platinum and diamond; Dwana Ceaser, bronze; Elah Moore, silver; and Cynthia Carrasco, bronze. Caregiver levels are based on the amount of service hours with the company as well as continuous training completed. Senior Helpers also named Denise Madden as the September caregiver of the month.

David Summers, an associate professor of entrepreneurship in the University of Houston-Victoria School of Business Administration, recently had an article published in the Sam Houston State University Center for Rural Studies' "Rural Conversations" August newsletter. He wrote about entrepreneurial expectations in rural communities. Kacey Lindemann Butler, a business adviser for the UHV Small Business Development Center, also wrote for the newsletter about business transitions for owners who are retiring.

Keith A. Brown, superintendent for Bay City Independent School District, was named as a finalist for the 2013 Superintendent of the Year award. Regional winners and state finalists will be recognized, and the state winner will be announced Sept. 28 at the second general session at the Dallas Convention Center.

American Bank announced Victoria banker James P. "Jim" Johnson has joined its Victoria branch team as senior lending officer. The bank is located at 4304 N. Navarro St. Johnson has more than 25 years of banking experience in the Victoria market, with 23 of those years in various business lending positions with First Victoria National Bank, including six years as its agribusiness lending manager.

Mark Ward Sr., an assistant professor of communication at the University of Houston-Victoria, was competitively selected to present his research in May at the Rhetoric Society of America biennial convention in San Antonio. He will be part of an international panel featuring two American and two German scholars on rhetoric of the Holocaust. Ward will also present a paper on rhetoric and remembrance at the historic sites of the Texas Independence Trail Region.
