PORT LAVACA - Calhoun coach Virginia Parsons didn't let being down early Tuesday get to her or her volleyball team.
It was the first game of District 30-4A play, but the Sandies wanted to make sure they started off in the right direction.
Tuesday night, they did, defeating Victoria East 25-21, 25-9, 25-12.
"I think the kids settled in; it's our first district match - and understanding their roles as a team," Parsons said. "I think they settled down. I tell them every game matters"
The Lady Titans held a lead in the first game, but it was short.
Though East went on to lose the lead and finish the first game close, things changed in the second and third game.
"In the first game, we were a team," Lady Titans coach Jamye Pauley said. "The second and third game, we kind of lost touch of that, lost base with playing together as a team, coming to the middle of the floor. When you don't have the momentum, you don't have the excitement."
Dakotah Peterson helped the Lady Titans through the uphill battle with five kills. However, it was the Lady Titans' errors that doomed them.
"We started making errors, and everything just went downhill," Peterson said. "We got errors, and we wouldn't shake them off."
In the second game, it was not until being down by six that the Lady Titans put a point on the board.
The point came off an error by the Sandies.
Errors would come rarely for the Sandies, thanks to senior Jordan Edison.
Edison, with a team high 15 kills and two blocks, helped the Sandies dominate in the second and third game.
"We were down, and we kept our composure, so I think that helped us out," Edison said. "In the second and third game, we kept it up; we kept going. It was a really good game defensively for us."
For the Lady Titans, Tuesday night was a rough game as the 3-0 decision was their third-straight loss. They say the defeat, however, will be short-lived.
"It's one of those things where it takes three games (to win)," Pauley said. "(We're) going to turn around and push right back."
