Victoria County tax rate to bring in $1.8 million more than last year

Victoria County property taxes will bring in about $1.8 million more than last year.
Commissioners gave final approval Monday to the tax rate, which has remained at 39.86 cents per $100 valuation since 2004.
The owner of a $100,000 home would owe $398.60 in county taxes, the same as last year, if the property value did not change, County Auditor Judy McAdams said.
With increases in property values and $733,769 in new property added to the tax rolls, the tax rate accounts for an 8.8 percent increase in revenue over last year, according to county financial records.
Property taxes account for about half of the $36 million general fund, which pays for law enforcement, personnel, equipment and other needs, McAdams said. The total county budget, which includes the airport and special revenue funds, is $52.89 million.
Over the nearly 10 years the tax rate has been used, County Judge Don Pozzi said he recognizes increases to property values.
However, "with 14 new employees, restructuring of salaries within some departments and capital improvement costs we are looking at, we felt it was necessary in the budget," he said.
Although Commissioner Gary Burns brought up lowering the tax rate last year, Pozzi said there were no significant discussions this year in diverting from what has become the 10-year norm.
He mentioned the national recession and its effect on the county.
"There were two years the tax rate was below the effective rate, and we didn't increase it," Pozzi said.
Now, officials have reinstated most benefits and employee positions cut during the recession, and all that is left to address is longevity pay, Pozzi said.
