The resignation of Thomas Marion O'Connor from the Victoria College Board of Trustees was approved at Thursday's special board meeting.
After serving the college for almost 48 years as a trustee, O'Connor's commitment to keeping academic standards high will be sorely missed by the board, said board President Ron Walker.
After returning from a closed meeting, trustee Robby Burdge made the nomination to appoint John Villafranca, DeTar Healthcare System director of outpatient development and marketing, to the vacant District 5 seat.
"I'm totally flattered," Villafranca said. "I can't tell you how happy I am."
Villafranca was not present at the meeting but was notified of his nomination shortly afterward.
"My interest in education has always been there," Villafranca said. "We have to offer opportunities for our young students and continue to change things that are needed. Education is the key to success."
In O'Connor's letter of resignation to the board he wrote, "I leave with regrets but know that current and future board members will effectively lead the institution to ensure it continues to provide quality, affordable educational and training opportunities for generations to come."
Villafranca will be sworn in at a later date.
