Who is your role model and why?

My role model is my older brother, Carlos M. Benavides, 86. Our mother was a widow, so she washed and ironed clothes and cleaned houses to earn a living. My brother worked and gave his money to my mother. He moved us from Benavides to Port Lavaca after he took a job with Alcoa. He didn't have a high school education but learned on his own.

He read the newspaper, and he understood what was happening in the world. If he told somebody that he would do something, he did it. He continued to help my mother and me, even after he had his own family. He is always there when there is a problem. He is steadfast. He is a silent, gentle giant.

Joe Pena, 72, retired Port Lavaca police chief
