A man charged with kidnapping two travelers was indicted by a Victoria County grand jury Thursday.

Bobby Ray Carter Jr., 32, of Victoria, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, two counts of aggravated kidnapping and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.

Victoria County Sheriff's deputies found two Dallas men, both in their early 30s, about 3 a.m. July 22 severely beaten near U.S. Highway 59 and state Highway 185.

The men were driving to Corpus Christi and stopped at a convenience store in the 300 block of North Navarro Street in Victoria to ask for directions. After talking with four men in a white car, who were also looking for directions, they were kidnapped at gunpoint, severely beaten and left in a field with their car. Their keys, cellphones and personal belongings were gone, according to an earlier report.

Carter admitted to being there, Victoria County Criminal District Attorney Stephen Tyler said Friday.

Keith Weiser was appointed to represent Carter.
