OSHA to investigate Karnes County industrial accident

Sept. 26, 2013 at 4:26 a.m.

Two state agencies will investigate an oil and gas accident in Falls City that sent four people to a San Antonio hospital with severe burns, Karnes County Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva said.

Villanueva said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Texas Railroad Commission will investigate the incident that occurred at 10:47 a.m. Tuesday at a rig owned by Freeport-McMoRan Oil and Gas on Farm-to-Market Road 791 and County Road 207.

The names and hometowns of the injured were not available.

After a water pipe burst, six people were injured. Four were taken by helicopter to the San Antonio Military Medical Center burn unit with second- and third-degree burns, he said.

Since the oil boom in Karnes County hit about two years ago, accidents similar to Tuesday's are becoming commonplace, he said.

"It's nothing new to have two to four choppers land at a scene in Karnes County," he said. "We had three Tuesday."
