The Morning Study Club members welcomed Scott Mohan, executive director of the Theatre Victoria, and Michael Teer, its technical director, who presented the 2014-15 season's list of plays. Theatre Victoria was organized in 1977, when it began performing musicals and play productions. It supports theater education programs that include a two-week intensive theater camp, which strives to instill confidence and self-esteem in children and adult performers.
"Stars of Tomorrow" is a workshop for children ages 4 through 8 June 16-20, and "Headliners" will be June 15-29 for children ages 9 through 18. Each workshop will focus on three performance disciplines. Campers develop the necessary skills for practical application in life and on the stage and then shine as they perform in one of the camp's three musicals during the T3 Showcase. Up to 90 kids will be on stage during these performances.
The Victoria Theatre's season begins June 28-29 with the three plays the children worked on during their camp: "Hairspray Jr.," "The Aristocats" and "Dinosaurs Before Dark." This program will be followed by "Beauty and the Beast" on July 23-27. There will be an additional five plays and musicals after that. Theatre Victoria is the resident company at the Leo J. Welder Center for the Performing Arts.
The Morning Study Club sent their $100 honorarium to Theatre Victoria at the request of Mohan and Teer.
Virginia Shults presided. Michael Ann Ruddock led the collect and the pledges to the flags. Dottie Mints presented the treasurer's report.
Ruddock announced that the next meeting would be a book review by Cindy Schnebly, professor at the University of Houston.
Sharon Green read a resignation and a new membership recommendation. Sue Jones was unanimously elected to membership.
Shults announced that our $1,000 scholarship had been sent to Victoria College. She also thanked the social committee for their hard work providing wonderful refreshments on Friendship Day as well as the greeter JoAnn Alford and the hostesses Don Beth Junkin, Christine Collins and Wanda Murray.
