Cuero, Yoakum girls headed to state

Two schools from District 26-3A are bound for the upcoming UIL state golf tournament.

The Cuero girls golf team qualified for the state tournament for the second year in a row after coming in third place at the Region IV-3A regional tournament in Sealy.

Cuero's five-person team scored a 743 total.

Chelsea Veit, a Cuero senior, scored lowest with a 93, 86, 179 finish.

Mary Kate Krueger finished with a 95, 104, 199.

Veit, Krueger and teammate Jennifer Sturm helped lead Cuero to its first regional golf tournament win last year.

The Lady Gobblers finished 11th in the 2013 state tournament with a 859 total score.

Yoakum's girls team beat out Cuero by four strokes for the second-place finish at the regional tournament in Sealy.

The Lady Bulldogs will return to the state tournament after failing to qualify for last year's for the first time since 1982.

Fredericksburg won first place with a 695 total.

Leeanne Shackelford led Yoakum with a 83, 91, 174 finish. Elizabeth Moehlman finished five strokes behind Shackelford with a 179.

Anna Kvinta - whose older sister, Emily, went to the state tournament for Yoakum in 2004 - scored a 199 over the two-day tournament.

Yoakum won the district tournament earlier this month with a 770 total after two days of play.

Cuero finished second with 781, and Gonzales came in third with an 835.

El Campo heads back to state

El Campo's boys golf team won the Region IV-3A tournament with a 642 overall total April 16.

Led by Cody Marquardt, who shot a 150 two-day score, the Ricebirds will be making their second consecutive state appearance.

Chad Quinn shot a 163, and his brother, Collin, finished with a 168.

Ethan Martin scored an 170, and Blake Krpec finished at 171.

The state golf tournament will be April 28 and 29 at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort near Austin.

The par-72 course covers 7,205 yards.
