Six people were taken to Victoria hospitals Wednesday afternoon after the vehicle they were traveling in flipped several times.

Maria Elizabeth Melendez, 59, of Mexico, was driving a Chevrolet Suburban northbound on U.S. Highway 59, about a fourth of a mile from Farm-to-Market Road 530 in Jackson County, when the vehicle drifted from the outside lane, said Trooper Gerald Bryant, a Department of Public Safety spokesman.

In an attempt to correct the lane change, Bryant said the driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to skid across the highway into the median and flip about three times.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Melendez was transported to DeTar Hospital Navarro with injuries that were not life-threatening. Melendez was still being evaluated in the emergency room about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Karina Moreno, 38; Jesus Martinez, 62; and three children, ages 2, 9 and 14, all of Mexico, were taken to Citizens Medical Center with minor injuries, Bryant said. All were treated and released. Trooper Kevin Henneke is investigating the wreck.
