Crossroads-area residents are invited to wear a college T-shirt on Friday as part of the GenTX Day support of higher education.

Generation TX, or GenTX, is a statewide initiative started by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to encourage an entire generation of Texans to attend a two-year college or four-year university. The Victoria GenTX Day is a joint effort between Victoria College, the University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria Independent School District and local organizations and businesses.

Participants are encouraged to submit their favorite GenTX Day photo to the Victoria Advocate's GenTX Day photo contest. Photos may be submitted at on the Your Photo tab; the deadline is 5 p.m. May 9.

This year's GenTX Day activities include a call to action statewide to motivate students with a real-world college experience that inspires them to visualize a career goal and take the steps to achieve it. Prospective college students are encouraged to enter the statewide PicTour Contest!, which involves taking a college tour on GenTX Day and submitting a favorite tour photo. Victoria College will offer tours from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on GenTX Day. To schedule a tour, call 361-485-6823.

The PicTour Contest! submission period is from 6 a.m. to midnight at the GenerationTX Facebook page on GenTX Day on Friday. For more information, go to

Crossroads residents are also urged to spread the word about GenTX Day participation. To view local GenTX Day updates and photos, like GenerationTxVictoria on Facebook or follow @GenTXVictoria on Twitter.

"The Victoria community really came together last year on GenTX Day to show young people that we support them and want them to go on to college," said Darin Kazmir, VC director of Marketing and Communications. "Victoria has been recognized statewide for our GenTX Day efforts, and we're hoping for even more participation this year."

Diane Boyett, Victoria ISD communications director, said VISD is excited to join the statewide initiative for the second year.

"The simple wearing of a college T-shirt starts many conversations about continuing education," she said. "Starting those conversations with our students is critically important in making certain every child knows education does not stop after high school graduation. We are all lifelong learners. These are important conversations, and GenTX Day is a fun way to inspire our students to set goals and accomplish great things."

UHV Interim President Vic Morgan said GenTX Day is an important initiative for the state in raising awareness of higher education opportunities available for all Texans.

"A higher education is critical for the students of today to be able to succeed in their future careers," he said. "I want to encourage all community members to show their support by wearing a college T-shirt."

Victoria College students, faculty and staff will be decked out in college T-shirts and will take part in a GenTX Day photo session with Captain Vic at 9:45 a.m. Friday in the VC Quad.

UHV students, faculty and staff will wear college T-shirts and meet at 10 a.m. at the jaX, the Jaguar sculpture, to take a GenTX Day photo.
