The Victoria Symphony League met April 22 in the home of Carol Rhode.
President Francisca Watts called the meeting to order and thanked Suzanne Foertsch, Shirley Buckert, Helen Knebel, Ila Knabe and Carol McLarry for serving as co-hostesses.
Guests were music director Darryl One and his wife, and Tommie Johnson, of Louisiana.
One thanked Victoria Symphony League members for assisting with the operation of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra. He explained that the next symphony performance would be Master Series 5 and would include Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3" and "No. 1" and also Respighi's "Fountains of Rome" and "Pines of Rome."
The Symphony League members happily welcomed two new members, Sarah Waldrop and Rebecca Thomasson.
Minutes from the previous meeting were read by secretary Helen Hultquist, and the treasurer's report was given.
Committee reports were given. Education Coordinator Debbie Durham thanked LaNell Billings, Beth Person and Simone Tipton of the Victoria Symphony League Education Committee for volunteering at the pre-UIL Victoria Independent School District Orchestra concert this month. Durham has also researched, sought advice and created a proposal and initial budget that went before the Victoria Symphony Orchestra education committee, finance committee, executive board and board of directors.
All groups approved creation of a youth/community orchestra that will be a joint effort with Victoria College.
Valerie Parker, publicity chairwoman, expressed appreciation to the Victoria Advocate for the prompt publication of Victoria Symphony League meetings. Mary Virginia Jacobs, rehearsals chairwoman, gave a schedule of members who will assist.
A reminder was given for the April 26 "After Concert Party" at the Victoria Women's Club House. This was sponsored by members of the Symphony League.
Shirley Buckert gave the schedule of next year's meeting locations. The first meeting will be Aug. 20 at the Victoria Women's Clubhouse.
Members sang the doxology, and the meeting was adjourned for lunch.
