Art Corner: Michael Windberg heads art opportunities for August

Aug. 2, 2014 at 1:06 p.m.

We have some big changes to our building and big opportunities for you during August at the Victoria Art League.

Michael Windberg, son of Dalhart Windberg, has moved back to this area and recently joined the Victoria Art League. We are so pleased to have him back in our area. He is going to offer a workshop in oil painting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 28 to 30.

Windberg taught oil painting workshops with his dad for years and is a very good instructor, and I am sure if you take his class, you will agree. If you are a beginner or if you have some or much experience, he will try to take you to a new level.

Windberg would like to start weekly classes in painting on from 2 to 5 p.m. or 6 to 9 p.m. Mondays if enough people are interested.

So if you are interested in learning to paint or paint better, contact him for more information at 361-649-2833 or email

Jim Feig is teaching digital photography classes, which will end this month, but he will be starting a new beginner's digital photography class from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Aug. 26. This will be taught for five weeks until the last Tuesday in September.

Our artist of the month will be Roxanna Blanton, who will display some of her watercolors and pastels in our special Artist of the Month section in the gallery. We will have a reception for her at 2 p.m. before our Aug. 10 meeting, so come see her work and visit with the artist.

Then at 2:30 p.m., we will have Jim Frank demonstrate making heads and faces in clay. Frank plans to teach a small workshop in September on clay sculpture. For more information, contact him at 361-575-8056 or 361-649-6623.

This month, we are continuing to improve our fine, old, historic building by adding new flooring over the whole gallery, office and kitchen area. It will give the gallery a pre-1900 look and feel.

Also this month, we restained the bar and cabinets to bring them back to their original look. We are excited to see the new floor and again are reminded of all the people and grants that have made this and all the other restoration possible.

Thanks to the Trull Foundation from Palacios and the hotel occupancy tax funds from the city that made our new floor a reality.

Be sure and put us on your to-do list when you have a chance and come down to the Art League and shop around for some art for those special people and events as they arise.

Also, stay tuned for information on upcoming classes and workshops like Angie Banta Brown's watercolor workshop, my pottery classes, Jim Frank's clay sculpture workshop, Rita Kirkman's pastel workshop and other possible drawing, stained glass, mosaics and other media opportunities as they arise.

Bill Bauer is the past president of the Victoria Art League.
