A 35-year-old motorcyclist from Lolita and his passenger were injured Sunday afternoon after crashing into a pickup truck on the Lavaca River Bridge.
Roman Hajek was flown by helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston with broken limbs, said Trooper Gerald Bryant, a Department of Public Safety spokesman. The wreck occurred at 1:35 p.m.
Hajek's passenger, Veronica Bixenmann, 36, of Victoria, was taken to Citizens Medical Center, where she was still being evaluated at 6 p.m., a house supervisor said.
An emergency room spokesman at Memorial Hermann said Hajek was in good condition.
Hajek was westbound on Farm-to-Market Road 616 when he crashed into the back of a 1999 Dodge pickup. The driver, Victor Sanchez, 58, of Edna, had lost two mattresses from the back of his truck while he was eastbound toward Lolita and turned around to retrieve the mattresses, Bryant said.
Sanchez pulled onto the shoulder, made a U-turn and turned into a boat ramp area before proceeding back onto the road. That is when his vehicle was struck, Bryant said.
Sanchez and his passenger, Maria Hisquierdo, 52, of Edna, were uninjured.
The accident is under investigation and is being worked by Trooper Drew Alexander with the assistance of Trooper Kevin Henneke.
