Pay with check for fundraiser items

Editor, the Advocate:
As the 2014-15 school year approaches, I want to share some advice regarding school fundraisers.
My children participated in school fundraising projects when they were younger, so I have always been happy to "pay it forward" by supporting kids who get out there and knock on doors to help their schools. Last year, however, I had a bad experience.
Here's what I learned: If you are ordering products from someone you don't personally know, get the student's name, the parent's name and a phone number. Do not pay with cash. Write a check payable to the school - in the event that you do not receive what you ordered, but your check is cashed - you and the school have some recourse.
If you have a problem you cannot resolve with the parent/child you ordered from, contact the school to make it aware - and ask for its assistance.
