Aug. 16, 2014 at 2:06 p.m.
Students planning to attend Victoria College this fall who didn't attend Pirate Orientation have a final chance to learn about VC before to the beginning of the semester.
New students can still register for fall classes this week, at which time they will sign up to attend orientation Saturday.
The deadline to register and pay for classes is noon Friday.
Fall semester classes begin Aug. 25.
More than 500 new freshmen took part in VC's Pirate Orientation the week of Aug. 11.
Student Ramon Alaniz, who attended Pirate Orientation on Thursday, said he found the event "really entertaining."
"All the teachers I've talked to have their own personalities, and they each try to explain what they are trying to get to us within a good amount of time, and they do it in a way which I can understand," Alaniz said. "My favorite part during orientation was playing giant Jenga. We completed the game without making it fall."
Students who attend Pirate Orientation from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday will participate in interactive tracks with topics such as:
Computer help desk, Pirate Portal and payments
Blackboard (VC's online learning system)
Admissions and Welcome Center, testing and police and campus safety
Library, tutoring and supplemental instruction
College Success Factor Index (assessment to help determine student strengths)
Advising and student activities
Parents and family members of new freshmen are invited to attend Pirate Orientation on Saturday, which includes a special breakout session for them.
Students wishing to register for the fall semester should speak with an adviser in the Advising and Counseling Services Department in the Student Services Building.
Advising and Counseling Services will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday; 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and from 7:30 a.m. to noon Friday.
