A Hallettsville man was sentenced to 28 years in federal prison Thursday for receiving child pornography.

James Leland Copeland, 42, pleaded guilty May 10.

Copeland must also register as a sex offender, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's office.

When Copeland was arrested at his home in Hallettsville on Dec. 18, 2012, he was wanted on Tennessee warrants charging him with failure to register as a sex offender. He had been previously convicted of possession of child pornography in the Eastern District of Tennessee in 2004 and sentenced to 51 months in prison.

During a search of his home, officers found images of child pornography on his computer. They also found emails between Copeland and Desiree Lee Padilla, of Brownsville, according to the news release.

The two discussed their mutual sexual attraction to children, and Padilla sent him explicit photos, according to the news release.

Padilla is serving 25 years in prison after she was convicted of sexual assault of a child, according to the news release.
