A Victoria woman was walking on Delmar Drive when a vehicle struck and killed her early Saturday morning, said Lt. Jason Cross of the Victoria Police Department.

Police received the emergency call about 3:15 a.m.

Natalie Luna, whose age was not available, was walking with three men and a woman when she was struck by the vehicle traveling north in the 500 block of Delmar Drive.

The vehicle then left the scene.

Victoria police arrested Hector Garcia, 46, of Victoria, who is suspected of being the driver. Garcia was found about 3:30 a.m. by police hiding behind a bedroom door at his brother's house in the 3400 block of East Rio Grande Street, according to the Victoria County Sheriff's Office arrest complaint.

Garcia acknowledged to the officer that he knew he had struck Luna when she entered the road, the document said. He said he kept driving because he panicked, according to the document.

Garcia smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes and had difficulty keeping his balance, the police officer noted on the complaint. He performed "poorly" on field sobriety tests and was arrested, the document said.

Luna, who was taken to Citizens Medical Center with critical injuries, was pronounced dead about 4:27 a.m., a hospital supervisor said.

Garcia was taken to a hospital for a mandatory blood test and was arrested on suspicion of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle.

He remained in custody Saturday afternoon, and the investigation is continuing.
