Karen Barber, CEO of Yoakum Community Hospital, was recently named to the Becker's Hospital Review inaugural list of 50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know. This list recognizes CEOs who have shown commitment to providing high-quality, accessible care to their patient populations in the face of rural health challenges. She joined Yoakum Community Hospital as a nurse in 1992. Barber became CEO in 2006. Since then, the hospital has added physicians, new services and an electronic health record system. In 2010, she was awarded the Texas Hospital Association's Pioneer Award, which recognizes excellence in rural hospital management.
