St. Joseph entered the TAPPS District 3-4A tournament as the No. 1 seed and will leave it the same way.
With a 50-41 victory over Incarnate Word Academy on Saturday at the St. Joseph gym, the Lady Flyers (29-7) cemented their spot atop their district and will enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed.
In the regular season, St. Joseph lost just one district game to Corpus Christi Incarnate Word Academy. Saturday, the Lady Flyers avenged that loss.
"It feels great," St. Joseph coach Carrie Myers said. "The girls wanted to play IWA because they felt they had something to prove. We came out and played hard."
The Lady Flyers were never able to establish a large lead, with IWA staying within 12 points the entire game. St. Joseph led by 10 at halftime. IWA outscored the Lady Flyers in the third quarter but only managed to close the deficit by one point.
"We calmed down and just played our game," Myers said. "We played with a lot of heart and pushed ourselves."
Junior Kensey Marshall led the Lady Flyers with 18 points, and Iris Young was second with 13. Christine Janak scored 10.
Now, the Lady Flyers await their playoff opponent. However, they must await the conclusion of the TAPPS District 4-4A tournament in Houston.
