CUERO - Layne Balfanz plans to pursue a pre-engineering major in physics with a minor in business before going on to get a master's degree in architecture.
Balfanz also wants to continue playing football, and the Cuero senior has found a place to fulfill his goals.
Balfanz made his commitment to play football Texas Lutheran University in the fall official Wednesday.
"They're getting brand new stadium and a brand new athletic facility," Balfanz said. "I looked around and saw what the tradition is there. I've always been around that at Cuero, and that's a place I want to be."
Balfanz played fullback and linebacker for the Gobblers and is expected to play linebacker in the Bulldogs' 4-2-5 defense.
"I think it's going to be a great fit," said Cuero head football coach Travis Reeve. "They run a very similar defense to what we do. I think it's a place where he's going to have an opportunity to play and contribute. They have a great coaching staff and guys who take the same approach that we do."
Balfanz hopes to have the same success at the NCAA Division III school in Seguin.
"Beginning my high school career, things weren't too great like they used to be," he said. "We started turning things around and improving, and I'm really pleased with this past football season. I think that's what's kind of happening at TLU. They had a rough season a couple of years ago, and they've been slowly turning it around."
