Natural gas is being burned off from an olefines unit at Formosa Plastics in Point Comfort on Tuesday morning.
Flames are visible from the highway.
"There has not been an explosion and no personnel are in danger. It's something that happens once in a while during the process and we have to vent that gas and burn it to get it out of the system," said Bill Harvey, plant spokesman.
The burn off began before 7 a.m. and should be completed by 1 p.m., Harvey said.
