For community members looking to start a business this year, the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center is hosting a workshop about the nitty-gritty details of what it takes to start a franchise.

Stephen Maeker, a franchise consultant for FranChoice, will lead the workshop "What You Need to Know Before Buying a Franchise." It will be from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 21 at the UHV SBDC office, 3402 N. Ben Wilson St.

Maeker will cover the basics of how a franchise works, its pros and cons, how to estimate income potential, different types and how to get financing. He also will give a detailed look into a real franchise disclosure document, which gives extensive information about the franchisor so a potential franchisee can make an educated decision regarding the investment.

To register for the free workshop, email sbdc@uhv.edu or call 361-485-4485.
