Alternative Medicine: Pain could be your nervous system out of sync

The key factors that cause our nervous system to get out of sync are stress, injuries, poor posture and chronic pain.

Studies show that 85 percent of all illness is related to stress, which causes a breakdown in communication between the nervous system and the body.

The nervous system responds to prolonged stress by oversecretion of certain hormones, which causes degeneration of nerve cells, free radical damage throughout the body and hormone imbalance. It's all downhill as far as your body is concerned.

When our brain senses we are in constant and ongoing stress, a slow breakdown of the nervous system and body is the result.

Fatigue, mental fog, hormone imbalance, inflammation, fibromyalgia, pain, decreased range of motion, weight gain and loss of motivation are just a few of the results.

We all have accumulated stress damage to one degree or another. Your body undergoes stress every day by assaults from physical, chemical and emotional stressors. Physical stress alone adds up over time to create damage within spinal joints.

For example, a car accident at 15 miles per hour can injure or even damage the ligaments of your spine - ligaments that give the spine proper support and stability. The body compensates for injury by immobilizing the joint through inflammation, bone spurs and other effects that reduce movement. Immobilization of the joint is called osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease.

The organs and cells being served by those nerves no longer communicate well with the brain. Everything goes downhill from there, including possible loss of function and pain, but pain is not always apparent until the damage is irreversible or life threatening.

The nervous system can get out of sync quickly after an injury such as a car accident. Joints, ligaments, muscles and other soft tissues that protect and support the delicate nervous system can become overstretched, torn, loosened, inflamed or simply pushed out of normal alignment, resulting in irritation of the nervous system.

Pain, numbness, tingling, tightness, loss of movement, weakness and loss of sensation can occur.

Further, the injury starts the affected area down the devastating and debilitating path of degeneration, including disc degeneration, spinal stenosis, bone spurs, back pain - these all can result from past injuries that were not properly taken care of.

The resulting nervous system dysfunction caused by the injury results in altered nerve flow to certain areas of the body, which leads to improper bodily function in any area of the body supplied by the nerves.

That injury you had 15 years ago that causes your back to hurt can also be the underlying cause of your constipation or hormone imbalance.

Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists longer than it should after the healing recovery period associated with a disease or injury. Chronic pain is a primary source of nervous system stress that leads to damage, degeneration, hormone imbalance and aging of the body.

You can reboot your nervous system for optimum performance by removing the causes that lead to symptoms of distress - not just covering them up.

You have an incredible ability to heal and auto-regulate body functions because of an inner intelligence that you are born with. Dr. Lewis Thomas acknowledged this as ".a kind of super intelligence (that) exists in each of us, infinitely smarter and possessed of technical know-how far beyond our present understanding."

This intelligence is mediated by your brain and nervous system, which communicate with every muscle, gland, organ and cell in your body.

Chiropractors are taught to work with this inborn intelligence and allow it to express itself as near to 100 percent of its capacity as possible.

They recognize that misalignments in the frame of the body cause interference in the nervous system and removing them allows the body to be a self-healing organism.

Periodic, corrective gentle adjustments to the spine and joints helps to realign the body's frame and restore function to your nervous system.
