Motorists must make sure the path is clear before opening their vehicle doors in traffic.
Why this specific code, and how does it relate to driving in Victoria?
There is a common misconception that pedestrians always have the right of way on a roadway. This is not always true.
Recently, while driving in downtown Victoria, I saw many drivers opening the doors to their vehicles to exit without any regard to oncoming traffic.
I wanted to remind everyone that it is important to look before opening your door to make sure that it is safe to do so.
For more on this law, see the Texas Transportation Code 545.418.
