Calhoun County school district students are preparing for their district's annual spelling bee.
Travis Middle School students compete against each other Friday; Port O'Connor Elementary School students are slated to compete Feb. 4; and HJM Elementary School students will compete Feb. 6.
The district's spelling bee competition will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 20 at Travis Middle School.
The outcome of the district bee determines which students will compete at the Regional Spelling Bee in Victoria on March 18.
The qualifiers from the Regional Bee will go on to Washington, D.C., to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Colton Blinka, a freshman at Calhoun High School, won the regional competition last year after spelling the word "prevaricate" in the 31st round.
Colton, 15, was eliminated in the third round of the national competition.
