Senior citizens should be aware of scams

Editor, the Advocate:

I am amazed at the phone calls that I have been getting at my house from scammers. Last year, it was a Reverend John Cooper who said he was with the Publishers Clearing House and that I had won $2 million. Did I want instructions on how to get it? Just go to the nearest H-E-B and Western Union and wire $168 to them, and I would receive my money.

Then Jan. 24, I got a call from a David Barnes with Readers Digest stating that I have won $2.5 million and did I want instructions on how to get my money?

Are these people seriously thinking we are all going to fall for this scam?

I called their numbers back after speaking with Publishers Clearing House and with Readers Digest - only an answering machine at one, and the other was no longer in service.

I am concerned that they will try this scam with another senior citizen and that others will fall for it.
