Inez man honored with service award

American Military University recognized Gilbert Ramon, of Inez, with its 2014 Alumni Community Service Award on Wednesday.

Ramon, 43, completed his Bachelor of Arts in Homeland Security at American Military University in 2009.

He has been involved in community service since 1990 and is active in the Boys and Girls Clubs, as an adult leader of Boy Scouts Troop 101, as a volunteer at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Inez and as a Marine Corps Toys for Tots coordinator.

In 2002, Ramon won the National Image Meritorious Service Award. He was also selected as the Marine Military Citizen of the Year and in 2002 and 2003 received the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

He is president and founder of Honor361. The nonprofit's goal is to build a monument that will educate the community about those who served in all the operations in the war on terror.

He served in the Marine Corps for 20 years.

Ramon was honored along with four others during an awards ceremony in tandem with the 18th annual American Public University System's commencement.
