Sen. Ted Cruz will have a press conference Friday after meeting with local business leaders at the University of Houston-Victoria.

The Republican lawmaker's stop is one of a few this weekend in the region. He plans to meet and speak with area political and business leaders and community members in Yoakum and Shiner on Friday and then travel to Fredericksburg and Stonewall on Saturday, according to the senator's press office.

His Victoria visit is a regular constituent visit, said Randy Vivian, president and CEO of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, which is helping promote Cruz's press event.

Cruz, he said, is in town to hear and discuss topics such as economic development, water and transportation.

"It's very important to the community," Vivian said, adding that the senator will get an understanding of what's happening in the region and how he can help.

Cruz's colleague Sen. John Cornyn made a similar visit to Victoria in early July to discuss workforce development.
