Victoria police officers are dropping their ballistic vests and strapping on aprons to help raise money for a local charity.

The officers will work a 5 to 9 p.m. shift Thursday at Texas Roadhouse, 4908 N. Navarro St., to support Special Olympics Texas athletes in the Victoria area.

Special Olympics Texas is a privately funded nonprofit organization that uses sports to encourage and empower people with intellectual disabilities.

The event is hosted by Law Enforcement Torch Run, a grass-roots fundraiser and public awareness group that's raised more than $11 million since 1985 for the Special Olympics in Texas.
