D'Mond LaFond is ready to begin his sophomore year of high school at Cuero.
But LaFond's college plans are set.
LaFond has committed to play baseball at Rice in the 2018 season.
LaFond's father, who is also named D'Mond and played football at Refugio, said his son made the commitment after the Rice coaches saw him pitch in Houston last weekend.
"The education part of it was the biggest thing for us," the elder LaFond said. "He wanted to stay in Texas, and there is not a better place than Rice."
LaFond was the Newcomer of the Year on the Advocate's all-area team and the All-District 26-3A teams as a freshman after leading the Gobblers to the regional quarterfinals.
He hit .362 with eight doubles and 26 RBIs. He had an on-base percentage of .426, scored 20 runs and had 16 stolen bases.
LaFond also had a 5-3 pitching record with a 3.22 ERA. He had 57 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched.
LaFond will play football for the Gobblers in the upcoming season.
