Cuero family still evacuated from home near leaking oil well

A Cuero family remained evacuated from their home Friday, a week after a nearby oil well began leaking.
Access to the area, which includes County Road 112, also remains restricted, a Devon Energy spokesman said.
Officials with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deemed the gas in the air below any level of concern a couple days after the leak was reported, but Devon Energy spokesman Tim Hartley said the continued evacuation is a precaution because of the home's close proximity to the well.
Hartley said they are working toward the installation of a capping well head, and once in place, the flow from the well will be diverted to a temporary pit, where a controlled flare will be used. Water, sand and small amounts of natural gas are still leaking.
"Once a capping well head is in place, we will move into the next phase of gaining control of the well," Hartley wrote in an email Friday. "We can't predict at this point how long it will take."
