Q:How did winning change your life? I think it really gave me an opportunity to travel and see a new place. That was the first time I had ever left Texas.

Q:How did winning affect the career you are in? A: I don't know if it really had a huge impact on my career. But I think it helped me in applications to college and the building blocks, like applications to college, that helped me get to where I am today.

Q:What advice would you give to this year's spellers? A: I would advise them to take it all in, relax and try not to stress. When I look back on it, more so than winning, I think about just the experience itself.

Q:Are you still a good speller?A: I think so. Spell check has probably taken a little bit out of it. I'm sure the people up there on the stage know more than I do at this point, but I think I still have some natural spelling abilities in there somewhere.

Q:How far did you advance at the national spelling bee? A: In eighth grade, I want to say I got out of the first round at least. I had a bit of a unique situation. My eighth-grade class was in Washington for a class trip while I was there. I do know I advanced out of the first round because I don't know how many 13-and 14-year-olds started screaming when I got the word right. I think I got out of the first round both years. But I don't know.

What prize did you win at the regional spelling bee? The big thing is that you win the trip to go to the national spelling bee. It's for you and your companion. I think I have a fanny pack and a couple T-shirts. It's a pretty substantial trophy. Whenever I was in eighth-grade I think it was half the size of me.
