An Edinburg woman was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of smuggling people for monetary gain.
Three people believed to be in the United States illegally told a deputy with the Victoria County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday that they paid an unknown person money in Mexico to help them cross into the United States, according to a report filed with the Victoria County Sheriff's Office.
According to the arrest report, a deputy saw two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed near U.S. Highway 77 and Warburton Road. He pulled over a gold Pontiac Grand Am driven by Perla Ruby Castellanos, 24, on suspicion of a seatbelt violation.
The other vehicle wasn't located.
Passengers inside the Pontiac told deputies Castellanos pulled over on the side of the road and they entered the vehicle without question. According to the arrest report, the passengers said they did not speak to the driver.
Castellanos was detained at the Victoria County Jail. Her bail has not been set.
