A boy died Friday after he was ejected from a sport utility vehicle that crashed on U.S. Highway 59 in Edna.

Four people - a man, a woman and two children - were traveling southbound when the 1999 Lincoln Navigator went off the highway about 4:30 p.m. near Farm-to-Market Road 822, said Edna Police Chief Clinton Wooldridge.

The vehicle rolled many times as it crossed a median, a highway on-ramp and a frontage road, Wooldridge said. The vehicle came to rest in a ditch.

The boy was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Darren Stancik.

Wooldridge said the woman and a girl were taken by helicopter to a Houston hospital. The man was taken to a Victoria hospital. Names were not available. Wooldridge said the children were between 5 and 8 years old.

Edna Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash. The Department of Public Safety is assisting.
