Piano students received awards for recital performances

Fifty students from Victoria, Port Lavaca, Cuero and surrounding towns participated in the Victoria Music Teachers Association Baroque-Sonatina Festival at the Fine Arts Building at Victoria College on March 1.

Debra Lemson, of Wharton, was the judge for this event.

Students of Beverly Cheshire, Marguerite DeBolt, JoAnn Hoffman, Ann Johannsen, Betty Jordan and Beth Waak participated. Each student performed either a sonatina or a piece from the Baroque era. They earned ratings of I+ (superior), I (excellent), II (very good) or III (average). Students earning I+ ratings received medals. Ratings received this year were: 38 I+ ratings; 10 I ratings and 2 II ratings.

Students earning I+ ratings and a medal were: Christina Benedict, Benjamin Bian, Gigi Cheng, Howard Cheng, Muriel Cotman, Elizabeth Du, Therese Eamiguel, Olivia Franklin, Amar Hamasagar, Caleb Huang, Joshua Huang, Phoebe Huang, Hailey Jenkins, Crystal Kwi, Evan Lin, Alex Liu, Anne Liu, Anthony Liu, Jeffrrey Liu, Felicia Lu, Zoey Lu, Zoe Ng, Breanna Nguyen, Mashhood Nielsen, Quinn Ruschhaupt, Daniel Shay, Heidi Shay, Hannah Sun, Angel Tung, Angelina Vincent, Claire Wang, Brady Watson, Bromli Watson, Kary Xu, Kelly Xu, Kyle Yang, Jessica Zhang and Sophia Zhao.

Elizabeth Du earned a trophy for five years of 1+ medals, and Daniel Shay earned a trophy for eight years of I+ medals. Both will receive their trophies at the VMTA Honors Recital at 2 p.m. May 4 in the Johnson Symposium at Victoria College.

Other upcoming VMTA events include a mini-recital at 10 a.m. April 5 at the Victoria College's Johnson Symposium. The public is invited to attend.
