Garrett Earlywine's high school football career ended in Nixon-Smiley's 82-26 Class 2A, Division II bi-district playoff loss to Refugio.

But Earlywine made a good final impression.

He rushed 12 times for 80 yards and had a 67-yard touchdown run. He also caught four passes for 100 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown reception.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Earlywine will have the opportunity to continue his career on the collegiate level after agreeing to play at Texas Lutheran University in the upcoming season.

Earlywine also played in the secondary for the Mustangs and had 100 tackles and five interceptions during the regular season.

Earlywine earned honorable mention as a defensive back on the Texas Sports Writers Association's Class 2A all-state team.

He was a second-team selection in the secondary on the Advocate's all-area team.

Nixon-Smiley athletic director and head football coach Carlton McKinney said Earlywine will make his commitment to the NCAA Division III school in Seguin official in a ceremony at the high school Friday.
