If you're trying to conceive, and it's not working, this can be stressful and heartbreaking but also expensive. In vitro fertility treatments, for example, can cost thousands of dollars, with no guarantee of success. But some inexpensive redecorating might just do the trick.

Using the principles of feng shui, the ancient Chinese body of knowledge revealing how to balance the energies of any given space to assure health and good fortune, to create the right environment can support a couple's efforts to become pregnant.

Here are some quick decorating changes that might tip the scales in favor of the pitter patter of little feet.

Brown is the color

Color is an important component of feng shui, and the colors that support conception are skin tones. From pale pink and rich chocolate browns to earthy ochres, skin-tone colors are not only attractive on the wall, but they're also beautiful. Such colors also look good with most natural skin tones, which might create a romantic mood more often.

Pick patterns carefully

When it comes to the bedroom, floral patterns are taboo in feng shui. That's because flowers are the yang expression of a plant, which can compete with a man's energies and dampen his romantic interest. Just think about the fact that most men dislike florals and you can see the sense of this. Instead, opt for solid color bedding in a complementary shade for the room color you've chosen.

One other feng shui piece of advice: Opt for green sheets on the bed because these will represent growing chi or pregnancy.

Pay attention to your front door

The front door plays a vital role in feng shui. Even if you're not trying to get pregnant, it's important that nothing block your front door. This can prevent energy from entering the house. Blocking objects in feng shui would include a tree or telephone pole opposite the front door.

If there's something blocking your front door that can't be removed, hanging a wind chime next to the door helps lift the energy and allows more energy to enter the house. It's something vital for all homes, but especially those where the occupants are trying to conceive.

Mirrors can also create problems at the front door and impede conception. Following feng shui principles, walking into a house and seeing a mirror directly opposite the door will push energy out of the house, making it difficult to become pregnant. Any mirror that reflects the front door can also become an obstacle to financial success. Hang a piece of artwork there instead.

Fine tune

If you're looking to become pregnant, you'll also be thinking about a nursery. Storing items in the space that will become your baby's room isn't a good idea, and avoid too much clutter. Babies are made of very delicate energy in feng shui, and if your home is full of unnecessary items, this can be an energetic block to pregnancy.

Remove clutter, especially broken items, which drain the house of healthy energy. To imbue your home with "baby energy," look for symbols such as artwork that features children. Chinese families hoping to conceive often display "100 Children" scenes to symbolize abundant fertility. Look for paintings and embroidered wall hangings like these at Chinese emporiums or online at sites such as Ebay.
