Best Athletic Program: Calhoun Sandcrabs

Participation was key to one high school athletic program's success in 2013.

Calhoun High School Athletic Director Richard Whitaker said he credits being named the best athletic program in the Crossroads to the students showing up for off-season practice during the summer.

"Success all starts with our kids," Whitaker said. "I'm very proud of the number of kids that show up during the summertime."

Calhoun High School had 475 students during off-season summer practice. The summer athletic program has been around since Whitaker joined the department in 2005.

"It goes to show what you can accomplish when you give up a couple hours each day during the summertime," Whitaker said. "I think it has been a big plus for all of our programs."
