Best Barbecue: Mumphord's Place Bar-B-Q

Mumphord's Place Bar-B-Q has done it again this year.

Advocate readers voted its barbecue the best in the Crossroads.

Ricky Mumphord, who co-owns the restaurant with his brother, Keith, said he thinks it is the way they cook their meats that sets them apart from the others.

"I think we cook it the old-fashioned way," he said. "It's a big part of the flavor. You get more flavor than smoke."

They start early and cook everything on-site, he said. Mumphord's starts its smokers with mesquite and oak.

"That's the biggest difference," Ricky Mumphord said.

He said the brisket has been a long-time favorite with his diners, but lately, the turkey breast has been selling out.

"My favorite are the ribs," he said. "They're real tender, and I use my own seasoning."
