Bus drivers deserve better compensation

The skills and demands of a job should be commensurate with the salary received. Apparently, this does not include Victoria ISD school bus drivers. Their position requires a commercial driver's license, working 12- to 14-hour shifts and possessing the ability to multitask under stressful conditions all for a remarkably low salary of $11 an hour.

There is and has been a substantial shortage of these drivers, which puts a burden on the remaining drivers. It is not a mystery why it is difficult to recruit new drivers with such a low salary and occasional loud and unruly children to contend with. VISD is not competitive with surrounding school district's salaries for school bus drivers. Ability to receive extra work on weekends has been reduced by the administration, allowing other VISD employees with commercial licenses to drive students to special events.

If VISD wants to retain qualified, professional drivers to safely drive our children, they need to rethink their present policy.
