Generation TX, or GenTX, is a statewide initiative started by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to encourage an entire generation of Texans to attend a two-year college or four-year university. One simple and fun way of bringing attention to college-going is by wearing a college T-shirt Friday. If you do, you will be joining thousands of Texans in communities all across the state doing the same. This visible symbol of support of the pursuit of higher education brings college-going to the front of mind to our youth.
Last May, we witnessed an overwhelming response in Victoria to the call for participation in GenTX Day. Schools, businesses and individuals sported college T-shirts that began discussions about enrolling in college. This year's GenTX Day, on Friday, should be bigger and better and encourage more youth to consider college.
Victoria College is proud to spearhead GenTX Day locally and to join forces with our longtime partners, the University of Houston-Victoria, Victoria ISD and area businesses, industrial firms, nonprofit organizations and the local media. We will wear college T-shirts to spread the message that attending college is an achievable goal. Ask your friends and family to wear a college T-shirt, too.
You are encouraged to submit your favorite GenTX Day photo to the Victoria Advocate's GenTX Day photo contest. To submit a photo, go to VictoriaAdvocate.com. Click on the Photos and Videos tab, then select the Upload a Photo option and use the category "GenTX Day 2014." Photos should be submitted by May 9. The winner will receive a free nugget party with the Chick-fil-A cow.
You can also like GenerationTXVictoria on Facebook and follow @GenTXVictoria on Twitter to see local GenTX Day updates and photos.
This year's GenTX Day statewide movement also includes a PicTour Contest!, which involves taking a college tour on GenTX Day. For details, visit GenTX.org.
If someone you know has questions about college that you can't answer, our Victoria College advisers stand ready to assist. We're just a phone call or email away.
Last year, Victoria and the surrounding communities did a great job of pooling resources to organize local GenTX Day activities, and these partnerships have been recognized on a state level. I offer my sincere thanks to all of the GenTX Victoria partners who have come together again this year to demonstrate our belief in the importance of higher education. Congratulations from this generation to the next.
