Two tanks were struck by lightning Friday afternoon, causing explosions that shut down both lanes of traffic on U.S. Highway 181 near Karnes City.

The tank explosions at Supreme Vacuum Services were reported about 1:30 p.m., said Karnes County Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva. Karnes City Fire Department was the first to respond to the call, followed by area fire departments, including Karnes County, La Vernia, Runge, Falls City, Stockdale and Gillett, he said.

No injuries were reported. The highway was closed and traffic rerouted to state Highway 123 for safety reasons, Villanueva said.

Firefighters fought the flames for about 45 minutes until the fire was reported under control about 2:45 p.m. U.S. 181 was reopened about 3:30 p.m.

Damage was also reported to a few company trucks and tractor-trailers, he said.

The Karnes County Sheriff's Office also responded to other reports of damage caused by severe weather, including another tank fire, an apartment fire and traffic accidents, Villanueva said.
