Friends, parents and boys.

For nine Our Lady of Victory Catholic School eighth-grade students, knitting class has become a safe place where they can talk about whatever is going on in their lives.

"This is one of the classes I'm going to miss the most," said eighth-grader Taylor Seerden. "Ms. Childress has become more of our friend here."

Teresa Childress, an English teacher at Our Lady of Victory, introduced the knitting class to the private Catholic school at the start of the second semester.

The class is only open to eighth-graders, Childress said.

Gina Tames, sat in the middle of the classroom on top of a desk showing fellow classmate Jordan Pyatt how to knit.

A red ruffled scarf was wrapped around her neck.

Taylor, 14, recently finished knitting a burp cloth for her aunt.

"We'll be offering it in the fall as well," Childress said. "But I don't think I'll ever find a better group than this. It has been great watching them teach each other."

Classmate Kelsey Ellett uses knitting needles from a starter kit her grandfather gave to her mother years ago.

"I showed him a scarf I made, and he was able to tell where I dropped a stitch," Kelsey said. "It's cool knowing I'm using a family heirloom."

Next school year, Childress said she hopes to see her first male students enroll in the class.

At the start of class, Childress reminded her students to return knitting needles they had borrowed from her before the semester ends.

"I didn't expect to have such a good turnout," Childress said. "All of them have taken a serious liking to either knitting or crocheting."

Eighth-grader Teresa Nguyen said she only knows how to crochet and has made the single-hook craft her main focus in class.

Teresa, 14, is the comic of the group.

"Sometimes, people ask why I got into crocheting," Teresa said. "Let's just say I got hooked on it."
