Victoria Fire Department responded to a fire Thursday afternoon at Sage Creek Apartments.

Traffic was blocked along the 600 block of Fillmore Street for about an hour as firefighters and police officers worked to determine the cause of the fire, which started in a mattress in building 11, said Officer B.J. Allen.

When officers arrived shortly before 5 p.m., tenants were using handheld fire extinguishers to put out the blaze.

"The residents here really helped us," Allen said. "I'd like to thank them for helping."

No one was injured, and no one was home at the time of the fire.

The names of the tenants and the cause of the fire were not available Thursday.
