Crossroads to honor veterans with Memorial Day activities

Veterans will be memorialized throughout the Crossroads beginning Saturday and continuing through Monday.
Here are some of the events planned:
Victoria - The Victoria County Veterans Council will present its Memorial Day program at 11 a.m. Monday at the gazebo at DeLeon Plaza. Guest speaker is 27th District Congressman Blake Farenthold. Other activities include placing of the wreaths by several area veterans posts and chapters. Charles Hauboldt will play taps, and Richard Garcia and Roger Walleck will read the names of veterans who have died since the last Memorial Day program.
PORT LAVACA - The Calhoun County Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day dedication at 10 a.m. Monday at Bayfront Peninsula.
The ceremony will include members of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American GI Forum.
Congressman Blake Farenthold and State Rep. Geanie Morrison will speak at the dedication.
The Calhoun County Historical Commission will dedicate a World War II historical marker. Refreshments will be served.
The unveiling of the marker will follow at 11 a.m. at the Calhoun County Courthouse, 211 S. Ann St. Mary Beth Rabenaldt, of Indianola, and Dr. James Record, of Victoria, sixth-generation siblings whose family comes from Indianola, will speak at the courthouse.
PORT O'CONNOR - The Port O'Connor Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a Memorial Day Kids Fishing Tournament from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at King Fisher Beach. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m.
The tournament, which is free and open to the public, is for children ages 3 through 12. The chamber will provide fishing bait as well as trophies and prizes.
The kite-flying contest will begin a 1 p.m. at King Fisher Beach. Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. All ages can complete.
PORT O'CONNOR - The Port O'Connor Grand Slam Cook-Off will be at King Fisher Beach all day Saturday.
Trophies and ribbons will be awarded for the best brisket, chicken, ribs, beans, chili, gumbo and other (sweet and sour).
Entry is free, and participants need to arrive at the beach Friday afternoon or Saturday morning to compete. Contact Syliva Rodriguez at 361-655-3521 for more information.
CUERO - DeWitt County Veterans Service Officer J. C. Hull will speak at the DeWitt County Courthouse, 307 N. Gonzales, at 10 a.m. Monday. For more information, call Elroy Peters at 361-277-2525.
YORKTOWN - Memorial Day services will be hosted by the Vietnam Veteran's Association at 10:30 p.m. Monday at Yorktown Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Main Street. For more information, call Clark Kolick at 361-564-2487.
EDNA - The Nature Center in Brackenridge Recreation Complex will host Memorial Day Games on Saturday. The games are free. Paintball will be open from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
EDNA - The annual placing of the flags on the graves of service men and woman will take place at Memory Gardens, 204 Buffalo St., at 9 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony.
GANADO - The American Legion Post 346 will host a Memorial Day service at 8 a.m. Monday at the American Legion Hall, 498 County Road 256. Breakfast will be served after the service.
HALLETTSVILLE - The Hallettsville Chamber of Commerce will host a Memorial Day Service at 9 a.m. Monday at the square near the Hallettsville Courthouse, 109 N. La Grange St. Wreaths are welcome, and breakfast will be available. Capt. Donald Hodges, a U.S. Air Force officer in charge of combat control in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Spc. Mitchel Rabon, who served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Afghanistan, will speak.
YOAKUM - The city of Yoakum will host a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Yoakum Fire Station, 203 Nelson St. Refreshments will be served.
SHINER - Shiner Chamber of Commerce will host a Memorial Day event at 8:30 a.m. Monday at Green-Dickson Park, off of Farm-to-Market Road 351. Activities include an opening prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance and a singing of the national anthem. Shiner-area veterans will be honored with 12 wreaths. Marine Lt. Col. Mike Whitten will speak. Boy Scout Troop 231 will fold the flag. Refreshments will be served at the Arthur Ward Pavilion.
REFUGIO - The VFW Post 6290 will host a Memorial Day weekend dance Saturday. Dance admission is $3 per person or $5 per couple. The bar opens at 6 p.m., and the dance is from 8 to midnight. Entertainment is DJ Lestor Gay, of Beeville. People can buy a chance to win a lotto ticket wreath. Tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5.
