Eloy Levario is always looking to take part in marathons in the Crossroads area. His purpose for running is to stay fit, active and in shape. But the 27-year-old Victoria native also runs for those close to his heart.

"I run for my family," Levario said. "I've been thinking about my great grandpa before this race because we just found out two days ago that he has skin cancer. I'm always running for a reason."

Levario, along with 300 other runners met at Chick-fil-A on Navarro Street to take part in the seventh annual Young Life/Chick-fil-A 5K/10K run Saturday morning.

Levario capped his monring with a first-place finish in the 25-29 age group in the 5K.

"I try to come out because it's exciting with the competition," Levario said. "It's a good run, and it's for a really good cause."

The race is put together by Young Life, a national non-profit youth outreach ministry which operates in cities and communities all over the world. The group's overall goal is to mentor high school kids and young adults by helping them succeed in life.

The group began in Gainesville in 1941 and has been active in Victoria for the last seven years.

"It's always a fun family event," said race committee chair Jennifer Yarbrough. "We have the same runners come out each year, and we always have a great turnout with great weather."

The race is held once a year, but Levario hopes to be back running again soon.

"I try to go out to Corpus and Houston to race in their races, but I always want to do my part for Victoria," the Memorial High School graduate said. "I always want to stand up for Victoria and represent the city and my family."

Father, daughter place first together

Casey and Isabella Roth love to run. The father/daughter duo had a chance to do it together Saturday.

Both finished first in their respective age groups. Isabella won the 11-14 5K race, while Casey won in the 45-49 age group.

"It was a really special moment," Casey Roth said. "I've always run my whole life in high school, college and have continued as I've gotten older to stay healthy. She (Isabella) really excels at this and whatever she wants to do."

"It was cool to beat out the competition," said 12-year-old Isabella Roth, who runs at Howell Middle School. "We do pre-athletics and we always run a mile."

Casey takes part in marathons and half marathons, but the Young Life/Chick-fil-A run was at the top of his list.

"It's a family affair," Casey said. "I try to do one or two runs a year, including the Houston Marathon. This race is great for the community because it brings a lot of people together. It's a good thing for Victoria."
