St. Edward's limits Jaguars to two hits
Bo Sheridan enjoys playing against tougher competition.
Sheridan knows it helps when UHV returns to NAIA Red River Athletic Conference play.
"I think it's good to play NCAA teams and better teams," Sheridan said. "It keeps us playing our best."
Sheridan was on top of his game, but the same couldn't be said for the Jaguars' offense in a 5-0 loss to St. Edward's on Tuesday afternoon at Riverside Stadium.
Sheridan started and yielded only one hit in four shutout innings, but UHV (14-22) had two hits against four pitchers for the Hilltoppers (23-17), who play at the NCAA Division II level.
"In the pen, I wasn't really feeling too good," Sheridan said. "I was trying to keep everything down. (Pitching coach) Doug (Heinold) just told me to keep everything below the knees and down in the strike zone, and luckily it worked out."
UHV coach Terry Puhl went to the bullpen in the fifth inning, and St. Edward's scored a run in the fifth and four more in the eighth.
"Bo threw well," Puhl said. "The reason I had to drag him out after four innings is because we're going to need him for the weekend. It's unfortunate because he's thrown well all year. At times, he's probably been our best pitcher."
The Jaguars travel to Austin for a conference series against Huston-Tillotson and they'll have to hit the ball better to be successful.
Jacob Atkinson had a single in the fourth inning and Chase Almendarez doubled in the fifth for UHV, which had 10 straight batters retired before Jonathan Banuelos reached on an error to lead off the ninth.
"The fact is the ball doesn't know what the age or what the status of the team you're playing whether it's NCAA Division II or NAIA," Puhl said. "It makes no difference. It's see the baseball and hit the baseball, and you have to attack it. I wasn't real happy with our attitude toward the game."
Sheridan hopes he gets a chance to get back on the mound this weekend.
"I've been throwing bullpens and stuff at practice to keep my arm in shape," he said. "But it has been a while since I've been in a game until today."
