The Victoria Generals not only lost the first game of a doubleheader against the Texas Marshals.

The Generals most likely lost out on a chance for the No. 1 seed in the Texas Collegiate League playoffs.

The Marshals' 5-1 win in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader at Riverside Stadium left the Generals (34-21) on the verge of being mathematically eliminated from the league's top seed.

The Generals went into Saturday night's second seven-inning game needing a win and three Brazos Valley Bombers loss to force a tie for the best regular-season record.

If the Generals do finish with the No. 2 seed, they would host the Acadiana Cane Cutters in a first-round playoff game Wednesday at Riverside Stadium.

Victoria East graduate Jonathan Ortega went 2-for-2 with a walk in his debut for the Generals.

But the Generals' only run came in the third inning when Cam Boudreaux singled and scored on a single by Christian Caudle.

The big blow for the Marshals (17-36) was a three-run home run by Phillip Kunsa in the fifth inning.

Between games of the doubleheader, the Generals recognized their host families and announced their season award winners.

Darian Simms was named Player of the Year, Gabriel Segura was selected as Pitcher of the Year, and Jack Kenley was named General of the Year.

A special award was presented to Generals photographer Dean Kibler for his years of service for the team.
