When will the students return to UHV, and is the university planning something special to welcome them back?
The first day of the University of Houston-Victoria fall semester is Aug. 28.
But before classes begin, students need time to move into the residence halls and make sure they have everything they need for the school year.
Incoming freshmen will move into the residence halls Aug. 24. Information about the move-in process has been sent to students and their families. Community members may see increased traffic on Houston Highway near the residence halls that day and the following weekend. Later that day, students will take part in a residence hall door-decorating party and a luau at the Jaguar Suites pool.
Jaguar Journey, also known as welcome weekend, welcomes incoming freshmen to UHV and officially kicks off the morning of Aug. 25. Jaguar Journey aims to help students become familiar with the university and meet their peers. The event continues through Aug. 27 and includes several activities, including casino night, a dance-off, karaoke, capture the flag, basketball and volleyball games, a live comedy show and shopping trips. Students also will attend a wide variety of information sessions about university services and campus life.
During Jaguar Journey, students will be divided into teams and take part in activities and competitions throughout the weekend. This allows students to get to know each other and make friends at UHV. In addition, the teams will be led by current UHV students who can share their knowledge about the university.
While new students are taking part in Jaguar Journey, returning students will be moving into the residence halls and preparing for the fall semester.
After Jaguar Journey, the university has a full week of activities to help all students get a positive start. Aug. 28 and 29, students will be able to visit a welcome station and receive information about Welcome Week events and Daily Deals, a program that involves businesses in Victoria offering discounts to UHV students.
Welcome Week will include a variety of activities to help students adjust to life at UHV. There will be a photo booth, ice cream social, movie night and grocery bingo. Students also can attend a part-time job fair if they want to find a job at UHV or in Victoria.
There also will be information sessions with university offices such as Financial Aid, Admissions and Student Recruitment, and Student Success.
The week will end with a bang at an annual tradition called Splatterbeat. Students will come to the recreational field behind Jaguar Court to listen to a live DJ and have the opportunity to beat metal drums covered in paint akin to the renowned Blue Man Group.
UHV is excited to welcome back students and meet the incoming class of freshmen, transfer and graduate students.
